TROPHY NEW ZEALAND INTERNATIONAL WINE SHOW 2023
Our 2021 Montepulciano was hand-picked in perfect condition on April 13th at an ideal 23 brix. The grapes were destemmed into an open top fermenter for fermentation. Gentle hand plunging and pump overs aided the extraction of all the colour and flavours in the berries. After spending one month on skins the wine was run off into fine French oak of which 20% was new where it spent just over 12 months.
2021 is one of Hawke’s Bays finest vintages with plenty of heat and little to no rain over harvest allowing us the opportunity to pick each variety at optimal ripeness. Securing a GOLD medal shortly after bottling is just the beginning for this beauty.
Pungent aromatics of cherry stone, blackberries and boysenberries saturate the nose. The palate follows with bold dark fruit flavours – the fine grained French oak intermingling nicely with the fruit giving weight and length. If you’ve got patience, this wine will continue to gain interest and complexity well into the 2030’s.
